Puglia
Puglia is the long strip of land, 400km from north to south that makes up the 'heel' of Italy. It was for centuries a strategic province colonized, invaded and conquered by just about every major power of the day, from the Greeks through to the Spanish. As elsewhere in the south of Italy, each ruling dynasty left its own distinctive mark on the landscape and architecture in surviving traces of Roman agricultural schemes and its fortified medieval towns.
Puglia is known for its clean seas and reliable sunshine. Its broad sweep of the Tavoliere plain, flat fertile lands are southern Italy's wheat bowl and the source of the country's best pasta.
The best and one of the least discovered gems in Italy is the Gargano promontory in the north of the province with some of the finest unpolluted sand and sea to be found anywhere in the Adriatic.
What a Place! "A perfect apartment in the perfect and 100% authentic Italian town of Monte Sant Angelo. We met no English speakers in our time there and even the local shopkeepers knew where we were staying!
It's also a perfect base for walking in the Gargano National Park and the Foresta Umbra and their are gorgeous little beaches a few kilometers away.
It's safe to say we fell in love with Puglia and Monte Sant angelo". FJM Dublin. July 18, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008.
